This charming, compact timber framed ski house with a Swiss flair is perched on the side of a mountain in Vermont. The basement level has a two car garage, accessed from the street above. The front door leads from the street level under a timber framed king post porch into a small entry with a stair tucked in the corner. To the left of the entry there is a guest bedroom and bathroom. Just beyond on the right is an L-shaped kitchen, overlooking the eating area. A curved custom counter provides a convenient location for informal meals.

The living room and kitchen both face out toward the view, with patio doors opening out onto a porch stretching across the gable end of the house. A stone fireplace turns the back of the relatively small room into a cozy gathering place, which complements the warmth of the timber framed house.

Upstairs is the master bedroom suite. There is a small study next to the stair, then the master bathroom with a traditional style claw-footed soaking tub, and the bedroom itself. The bedroom opens out onto its own, smaller, private balcony through patio doors with glazing above, adding light and space to the room and a view of the exterior king post truss. The view from both the master suite balcony and the main porch are both extraordinary, since one stands at tree top level, and looks down the mountain at a distant lake.

The view of the home, taken from below, shows how the house opens up to its view, maximizing the light and giving it a Swiss chalet feel. The combination of compact, sensible plan and timber framing details turns this into a very special vacation house.
