| This building was designed as a sympathetic addition to a nineteenth century Cape in downtown Hanover, NH. An existing inadequate wing was removed, making room for a larger and more practical addition for the growing realty company. Besides adding office space, the addition needed to be handicapped accessible, to include a meeting space large enough for the entire company, and to serve to unify the office, which had been separated in small offices in the old house. | ![]() |

The design has its entry at ground level, identified by a timber-framed canopy, which leads directly into a small hall with stairs to the left and an elevator to the right. Up half a flight is the reception area, with a small waiting area on the left and the receptionist at a built in desk on the right. The central light well connecting the two floors is a major design feature. With four curved braces at the corners, it is oval in shape, and allows light to flood the office all the way from the monitor on the roof.
There are two private offices for the owner and the office manager, plus a conference room that is used for private meetings and closings. Upstairs are two more offices, plus desks used by the various brokers in the office. A hallway to the right contains shared copy machines and an entrance through to the old building, which has more offices for brokers.

The elevator runs between the basement and the first floor, allowing handicapped access to offices and the conference room. On the basement level is a large conference room, which is used for weekly staff meetings and training for realtors from all three of the company’s offices. There is also a small kitchen that serves as a lunchroom, an exercise room and a bathroom.
Thanks to the new design, this office now has the additional space for realtors that it needed, plus the meeting room to allow everyone to gather together in one space. The timber framed interior is dramatic, functional, and relates to the original building, which is also timber framed. The new addition and antique Cape present the modern and traditional way to use timber framing, with the addition much more open and filled with light. The realtors are very pleased with their dramatic new office space.
