Even a glance at this home’s site plan shows the many detailed steps that went into designing this home. Since it is located on a river estuary with many adjoining wetlands, minimizing the home’s impact to the surrounding environment was very important. The major impact to the wetlands is the driveway, but with careful planning the alteration to the wetlands was reduced by 34 percent (to 1027 square feet) from previously approved plans. This change allowed the build site to also avoid wetlands of special significance while maintaining the necessary setback from the river and its wetlands.
The homeowner chose this build site for its wonderful views, and maximizing those views was of primary importance. The orientation of the home was planned to meet this goal, with the public areas of the home (kitchen, dining and living rooms) being positioned for the best views. The positioning of the home also works with the predominant weather at the site.
A garage helps act as a buffer to the home from the cold winter winds, while the summer breezes blow across the screen porch off the dining room. The cedar shingle exterior plays up the coastal nature of the home, but it has many craftsman elements as well, such as 6-over-1 and 4-over-1 windows.
The interior of the home has an informal mudroom entrance with access to the outside and garage, a feature which is essential at this wet site. The mudroom also provides access to the laundry and a lavatory, as well as leading into the kitchen. Informal living is the theme on this 1393 square foot first floor, since the family does not anticipate formal entertaining.
