ABOUT THE Vail Ski Home

Built as a vacation home in Arrowhead at Vail, Colorado, this design provides a modern take on a mountain style residence. It is the perfect place to get away at any time of year, located by the Beaver Creek resort and its 18-hole golf course, downhill and cross country ski trails.

The exterior of the house matches the style of western architecture, while employing the rustic beauty of an exposed timber frame inside. The warmth and massiveness of the timbers of the revealed frame are secured by pegged mortise and tenon joinery. They are perhaps the most striking feature of this home that has no shortage of amenities.

Another spectacular characteristic is a flagstone wall that flows into the house, eventually forming a massive chimney that is the centerpiece of the living room. This feature continues out behind the house to the terrace where it creates a waterfall and retaining wall.

This 6,000 square foot home included many “special touches” requested by the original owners. Upon noticing that the lower level would slope slightly downward on a hill, they realized just a little more excavation would make room for a regulation-size squash court. They also added an adjacent indoor golf driving range, allowing the owners to hone their golf swing no matter the weather. An in-home movie theater was also installed on the lower level, including armchairs, side tables and a state-of-the-art projection and screen system.

When vacation calls, this is a retreat that offers just as much as its mountain surroundings. Not only does it provide both open, dramatic spaces and cozy corners, but the amenities ensure that everyone can find a way to enjoy some relaxation and respite.
